As a father of a son on the autism spectrum, I have at times mentioned to my son that he should try to be more positive. I noticed that rather than helping him, it left him distressed. I have come to learn that for someone on the autism spectrum, as well as the rest of us, a comment like that is counter productive. Being positive is a judgment of oneself, as is being negative, and it leaves a person judging themselves negatively if they can't achieve it. Rather than causing my son to have to judge himself, I have honestly tried to get him to Accept himself for who he is without Judgment. I have noticed that since leaving judgment behind his confidence has grown month by month....
